Understanding and Accomplishing Coherence

Coherence is a state that has often been called “being in flow.” It is when the heart, mind, body and emotions are all working in sync, leading us to flow through life with intelligence, peace and composure. We are able to handle our daily interactions with clarity and maintain our energetic presence. HeartMath® views our energetic presence on a daily basis as a battery. Each thought, intention, action, and reaction either adds to the energy in our battery or depletes our energy.

To imagine this, have a journal or note pad close by. Choose a time when you are alone and able to close your eyes and have some time to yourself. One at a time, you are going to remember two recent interactions—first, one that upset you and second, one that caused emotions of peace, calm, happiness or love. Take your time. As you imagine each one, notice how you feel in your body—this would be your body energy. (We’re doing the peaceful one second so you will be restored to a peaceful energetic place.)

As you imagine the upsetting incident, breathe deeply into it to be clear about what emotions you felt that drained your energy and caused you to feel uncomfortable, challenged, angry, or sad. When you see and feel it fully, come back into the room and write about how your body feels this experience. When you are finished, do the following, which is a HeartMath® tool called the “Quick Coherence® Technique.

  • Close your eyes. Focus your attention in the area of your heart. Imagine your breath is flowing in and out of your heart or chest area, breathing a little slower and deeper than usual. (Sometimes it helps to inhale for 5 seconds, exhale for 5 seconds.)
  • Now make a sincere attempt to experience a regenerative feeling such as appreciation or care for someone or something in your life. (Try to re-experience the feeling you have for someone you love, a pet, a special place, an accomplishment, etc., or focus on a feeling of calm.) When you have done this, imagine in depth this time, place or being that made you feel peaceful and calm. Let this feeling flow through your whole body. You are building a place of calm energy in your heart—one you can go to anytime you are challenged. This feeling can be accessed through the two short instructions below to prepare you for any event or interaction in your life.
  • When you enter any space, you can draw on the energy stored in your battery to keep you in a place of calm and peace. Do this by consciously breathing into your heart so you recreate those positive feelings you created using the Quick Coherence™.
  • No one will notice what you are doing, but as you breathe deeply into your heart, you will feel the flow of coherence return, a state that will improve every area of life from emotional to physical health.
